A premium winery located on Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York State has been a participant in the NYWGF Export Program for over a decade and actively exports wine to Western Europe and Asia. In MAP 2021, this winery saw significant success in Nordic countries as a direct result of NYWGF’s MAP-supported activities, which included guided tastings with Vinmonoplet and Systembolaget buyers, as well as virtual webinars focused on UK importers.
In January 2021, NYWGF partnered with a Norwegian wine importer to facilitate an educational tasting for Norwegian wine monopoly buyers from Vinmonopolet. This event, supported by the Market Access Program, was highly successful and directly led to two (2) tenders specifically for Finger Lakes wines of New York in June 2021. The aforementioned winery was successful in their submission of wines to both tenders. As a result, to date, they have sold $63,857 to the Vinmonopolet alone.
In September 2021, NYWGF hosted a MAP funded market overview of Sweden in Stockholm. As a result of that event, one agent offered to host a tasting for buyers at the Swedish Wine Monopoly (Systembolaget). The aforementioned winery was also successful in this tasting and subsequent tender submission to Systembolaget resulting in sales of $30,984.
In addition to success in Norway and Sweden, the winery continues selling significant quantities of their high-end products in the United Kingdom. Through MAP funded webinars in 2020 and 2021 they were successfully matched with a prestigious UK importer. There is an estimated $18,924 pending re-order from that company.
According to the winemaker, “It is impossible to overstate the value of the Export Program in engaging the Norwegian and Swedish Monopolies to put out tenders for Finger Lakes wines…The results are already stunning. Norway is already our second largest market after New York State. When we think about the ongoing potential of these markets for our wines and those of our colleagues, the future looks bright indeed.”
